ART IN ACTION PROGRAM FEATURED ON CASCADE PATCH!
BE PROACTIVE PUTS ART IN ACTION THIS SUMMER!
Summer
Be Proactive's Art In Action program is in full swing, with this year's Healthy Hearts theme challenging students to use the arts, fitness and other outlets to make positive choices in life. More than 70 students have been engaged through the summer program. We've realized the following accomplishments along the way:
Healthy Hearts Discussion Groups
Each day, teen discussion groups are led to engage the students in dialogue on topics like: drug & alcohol education, STD and pregnancy prevention, good vs. bad habits, goal setting, healthy relationships, problem solving, eating well, hygiene, exercise, etiquette, character development and community service.
Healthy Hearts Seminar at Westwood College
On June 18th, students participated in a Healthy Heart seminar at Westwood College that was organized in partnership with Excel Science. During the visit, students rotated between seminars on heart dissection and anatomy, blood pressure, pulse and body mass index (BMI), healthy eating and exercise. The students concluded their trip with a visit to the Graphic Design labs to brainstorm ideas for the Healthy Hearts t-shirts they are creating.
Healthy Hearts Fitness Workshops
Boxing and dance-oriented fitness activities are being conducted twice a week with the support of Rhythma Dance Studios and the Sweat Shop Boxing & Fitness Studio!
Media Literacy and Positive Expression Through Songwriting
Each week, the students are engaged in workshops that challenge them to think critically about the music they listen to and to write positive and uplifting songs. The students, in turn, have a positive outlet to express their ideas, concerns and dreams. These workshops occur once a week (Wednesdays) and are being organized by F22 Studio and SESAC with the support of guest songwriters, DJs, producers and other volunteers.
BE PROACTIVE AND MEDTECH PARTNER TO GROW GREATNESS
Spring
Be Proactive is excited to partner with Medtech, a premier healthcare education provider, to grow greatness among Atlanta youth through positive mentoring and vocational education opportunities. This partnership will build on Medtech’s commitment to being a proactive contributor in the community and leverage the company’s portfolio of educational programs.
This January, Medtech launched the partnership by sponsoring Be Proactive through its Jeans for a Cause initiative, which enabled Medtech employees to make monetary pledges to Be Proactive in exchange for wearing jeans on Fridays. Monies raised by Medtech employees were matched by the company at the end of the campaign.
Jeans for a Cause was the first of several projects being organized to make mentoring and educational resources more accessible to at-risk families. Since the campaign, Be Proactive has continued to partner with Medtech to structure a range of educational opportunities and corporate engagement projects that connect Medtech employees to mentoring and community service. This May, Be Proactive students had a special visit to the Medtech corporate office, during which they participated in engaging conversations with Medtech staff on the importance of education and career readiness. The students also toured the facilities, had an amazing lunch and received gift baskets chocked full of Medtech t-shirts, scrubs and other swag!
This June, Medtech will partner with Be Proactive to help facilitate the organization’s Healthy Hearts Campaign, which will empower teens to improve their health through exercise, the arts and making healthy choices in their lives. Medtech students will be conducting physical fit tests over the course of the campaign, which is being launched in conjunction with Be Proactive’s summer Art In Action program.
